Artist Statement
Lily Maddocks is an artist from the South West of England, working primarily with print and paint.
With an interest in the relationship between art and ecology, much of her work involves recording her surroundings and working directly with materials collected during time spent outdoors. Employing a methodical and analytical way of working, she uses her practice to engage with and respond to her environment. Taking inspiration from certain types of environmental research, she endeavours to understand the areas where art and science intersect.
The repetitive nature of pigment making induces a process that is meditative and grounding. Gathering, archiving, and refining materials like rocks, soil and chalk give each piece of work a ritualistic quality. This process allows her to build meticulous knowledge about her materials and their geological history.
Location and map-making are also significant to her practice. She associates maps and grids with a similar kind of systemisation that is involved with the process of pigment making. Noting coordinates is a way for her to document this.
